Kehinde Wiley: The Prelude

Dec 8, 2021

London, UK

Luther spent a year composing, orchestrating, recording, producing, mixing, and mastering a symphonic poem in seven movements to be used as the score for Kehinde Wiley’s art film ‘Prelude’. The six channel film was installed in an exhibition of the same name at the National Gallery in London and will run (Dec 10, 2021 to April 22, 2022). Luther oversaw and directed installation of the film on site. For the opening night private event, Luther contracted eight black instrumentalists to play a selection from Mendelssohn’s Octet in E Flat Major, as well as his own work, Deeper Still.

Critical Acclaim:

“The score, by cellist and composer Niles Luther, is both romantic and wearying, filled with stirring emotional hooks. “
“The sonorous exhortations of Ralph Waldo Emerson to learn to live alone in nature are recited on the soundtrack, which also features a rousing orchestral score by the cellist and composer Niles Luther. “
